Checking for Winter Damage: What to Inspect Before You Hit the Road

Before you start flushing water lines or testing appliances, the first step in dewinterization is a thorough inspection of your RV’s exterior and interior. Cold temperatures, moisture, and pests can all cause damage over the winter, and identifying these issues early can save you from expensive repairs later.

Exterior Inspection:

  • Roof & Seals: Inspect the roof for cracks, soft spots, or peeling sealant. Even minor leaks can cause serious water damage.
  • Windows & Doors: Check for cracked seals, weather stripping deterioration, or gaps that could let in moisture or pests.
  • Sidewalls & Undercarriage: Look for any warping, rust, or signs of rodent activity in compartments.
  • Tires & Brakes: Check for cracks in the rubber, low tire pressure, or worn-out brake pads.

Interior Inspection:

  • Plumbing & Appliances: Look for signs of leaks under sinks, around the toilet, and near water connections.
  • Electrical System: Check batteries, fuses, and outlets to ensure everything powers up properly.
  • Furniture & Cabinets: Open all cabinets and drawers to check for mold, pests, or musty odors.

Catching small issues now can prevent bigger problems later in the season. If you find damage, address it before moving on to the next step of dewinterization.
