Your RV’s water system has been sitting idle for months, likely filled with antifreeze to prevent freezing. Now it’s time to flush and sanitize it so you have safe, clean drinking water.
Step 1: Drain the Antifreeze
- Attach a hose to the city water inlet and turn on all faucets, including showers and the toilet, to flush out the antifreeze.
- Don’t forget the low-point drains and outside shower, if your RV has one.
- Keep flushing until the water runs clear.
Step 2: Sanitize the Fresh Water System
- Mix ¼ cup of household bleach per 15 gallons of fresh water tank capacity.
- Fill the fresh water tank with this mixture and run it through all faucets.
- Let it sit for at least 4 hours (or overnight for a deep clean).
Step 3: Flush the System Again
- Drain the bleach solution and refill the fresh water tank with clean water.
- Run fresh water through all faucets until there’s no bleach smell.
- Replace water filters if needed.
This process ensures your water is free from bacteria, bad tastes, and leftover antifreeze.
